Lotte in Weimar - Roman

In his Goethe novel, Thomas Mann succeeded in "bringing the great old man onto the stage." The starting point is the historically documented visit to Weimar in 1816 by Charlotte Kestner, Goethe's unhappy childhood sweetheart and the model for the character Lotte in Werther. Thomas Mann skillfully arranges Lotte's encounter with Goethe, leading to conversations from which Lotte hopes to gain insight into their former passion.

Interrupting his work on Joseph, Thomas Mann devoted himself to his Goethe novel from 1936 onwards. Lotte in Weimar was published by Bermann-Fischer in Stockholm in 1939.
